AI image metadata

What AI metadata the remover finds

AI image tools write notes into every file they make. You can’t see them in the picture, but any app or platform that opens the file can read them. These are the four kinds the remover looks for.

  • C2PA Content Credentials

A signed record of how the image was made. OpenAI, Adobe Firefly and Microsoft attach it to the images their tools create, and it names the tool.

  • IPTC AI source type

A standard photo tag that says “trained algorithmic media”, meaning made by AI. Meta and other platforms read it.

  • Generator names

The name of the AI tool written into EXIF or XMP fields such as Software, Creator tool or Description: Midjourney, DALL·E, Stable Diffusion, Firefly and others.

  • Prompts and generation settings

Stable Diffusion, ComfyUI and InvokeAI save the prompt, seed, model and the full workflow inside PNG files. Anyone can read them back.

It works as a photo metadata remover too, taking out the ordinary details at the same time: camera model, date taken, editing software and GPS location.

How to remove metadata from an image

  1. Upload the image

Drop a PNG, JPEG or WebP file up to 20MB into the box at the top of this page.

  2. See what was in it

The remover lists every AI marker it found: Content Credentials, the IPTC AI tag, the generator name and any saved prompt.

  3. Download the clean copy

You get the same picture in the same format with all metadata removed, including camera details, dates and GPS location.

Why Instagram shows “AI info” on your post

Instagram and Facebook add the AI info label when they find signs that an image was made or edited with AI. Meta says two of those signs come from the file itself: C2PA Content Credentials and the IPTC tag for AI-made media.

That is why a real photo can get the label too. Use a generative AI feature on it in an editing app and the export may carry Content Credentials, even if you only removed a stray object from the background.

If you want to remove the AI label, removing the metadata takes those signs out of the file. It does not hide AI from detection that reads the pixels, and Meta may still ask you to label AI images yourself, so we can’t promise the label disappears.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI metadata remover?

A tool that strips the hidden data AI image generators write into a file. That includes C2PA Content Credentials, the IPTC tag that marks an image as made by AI, the generator name and any saved prompt. Leapd’s remover shows you what it found, then gives you a copy of the image without it.

Is the AI metadata remover free?

Yes. It is free with no signup and no credit card. You can clean 5 images a day.

How do I remove metadata from an image?

Upload the image above and download the cleaned copy. The remover saves the picture again in its original format and leaves out every metadata block: EXIF, XMP, IPTC, C2PA and PNG text. The only thing kept is the color profile, so colors look the same.

Can this remove the AI label on Instagram?

It removes the metadata that Meta says it reads for the AI info label, but we can’t promise the label goes away. Platforms can also detect AI images from the pixels, and they may ask you to label AI content yourself. Removing metadata does not change those rules.

Does it work as a C2PA remover?

Yes. The Content Credentials record is dropped from the clean copy wherever the file keeps it: APP11 segments in a JPEG, the caBX chunk in a PNG, the C2PA chunk in a WebP.

Can I use it as a regular photo metadata remover?

Yes. It works as an image metadata remover for any PNG, JPEG or WebP, AI-made or not, and as an EXIF remover: camera model, date taken, editing software and GPS location all come out.

How can I tell if an image has AI metadata?

Upload it. Before anything is removed, the tool lists each AI marker in the file and what it means. If it finds none, it says so and still gives you a copy with the other metadata removed.

Does removing metadata lower image quality?

No visible change. JPEGs are saved with their original compression settings, PNGs are lossless, and lossless WebP stays lossless. Lossy WebP files, and JPEGs that need turning upright, are saved at quality 95.

Can it remove invisible AI watermarks like SynthID?

No. SynthID and similar watermarks are hidden in the pixels themselves, not in the metadata. This tool changes metadata only, so those watermarks stay.

Do you keep my images?

No. The image is cleaned in memory and sent back to you. Nothing is saved.

Which image formats are supported?

PNG, JPEG and WebP, up to 20MB and 50 megapixels. Animated WebP files keep their animation.
